The Oldest U.S. all black middle class Municipality, Mound Bayou, Mississippi founded by ex- slaves in 1887.  Incorporated in 1898 founder Isaiah Montgomery born into slavery to Joseph Davis one of the wealthiest slave owner and brother to President and abolitionist Jefferson Davis.      Mound Bayou: The Historic Black Town in the Mississippi Delta - Unique    Coloring Joseph Davis believes in educating his slaves, he taught them how to read, write, and history. Isaiah was taught how to read, write, and history. His father also taught how to read and write taught history.
