Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center is seen in this file photo.  (KABC Photo) POMONA, Calif. (KABC) --  Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center is accused of conducting secret research on as many as 17 patients during back surgeries. A lawsuit against the hospital and two medical device manufacturers claims Pomona Valley allowed surgeons to implant patients with a putty designed to generate bone growth. According to evidence from an L.A. law firm, the alleged experiments were conducted between 2006 and 2011, with the majority occurring after 2009. An attorney representing 35-year-old April Cabana of Alta Loma said she was enrolled in the experimental research at Pomona Hospital without her consent in September 2008. The lawsuit contends the putty promoted excessive and unwanted bone growth onto her nerve channels, compressing the nerves. A second operation to remove the growth was unsuccessful. Cabana has reportedly not recovered from the surgeries and is now p...

Here Come The Nanobots

Image
File Photo" Artistic rendering by Ken Eward of a DNA truncated octahedron - Copyright Biografx New York - January 2, 2002 A team of New York University researchers has taken a major step in building a more robust, controllable machine from DNA, the genetic material of all living organisms. Constructed from synthetic DNA molecules, the device improves upon previously developed nano-scale DNA devices because it allows for better-controlled movement within larger DNA constructs. The researchers say that the new device may help build the foundation for the development of sophisticated machines at a molecular scale, ultimately evolving to the development of nano-robots that might some day build new molecules, computer circuits or fight infectious diseases. The research team was led by NYU chemistry professor Nadrian C. Seeman. Their findings are reported in the January 3, 2002 issue of Nature. Professor Seeman said, "DNA devices can provide models for the developmen...

Friday, July 20, 2012 Candice Cole and The Associated Press  Police Chief Dan Oates says 14 people are dead following a shooting at suburban Denver movie theater. He says 50 others were injured when gunfire erupted early Friday at the Aurora theater. Oates says a gunman appeared at the front of one of the Century 16 theaters. There was no immediate word of any motive. He says "witnesses tell us he released some sort of canister. They heard a hissing sound and some gas emerged and the gunman opened fire." Calls to police about the shooting started coming in about 12:30 a.m. Friday from a mall theater that was showing the Batman movie "The Dark Knight Rises," the office said. One person is in custody but there is no word yet of a motive. "The scene is still very active and we have little information for release at this time," police spokeswoman Cassidee Carlson said in a brief news release. Witness Ha...

George Zimmerman Molestation Accusations Are Relevant

Image
Zimmerman enters the courtroom during his bond hearing in Sanford, Florida. He is charged with second degree murder in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin. The George Zimmerman trial rocketed to the top of the headlines again with the revelation that a witness, deemed only witness #9 in the press, has accused Zimmerman not only of being a racist but also of  having molested her for 10 years , from the time she was 6 until she was 16. (He is two years older than she is.) The  defense repeatedly motioned  to have the molestation testimony blocked, with no success. Now that the accusation is public, Zimmerman's attorneys have signaled that they intend to try to discredit the witness, which most likely means running the standard issue rape defense strategy of putting the victim on trial to convince the jury she was asking for it.  The reaction to this news has generally been: It's irrelevant. That's what  Jonathan Capehart* argues , reasoning at the...
