President Ronald Reagan's Economic Policies

Image
Reagan and the Economy Ronald Reagan  was U.S. President from January 20, 1981 – January 20, 1989. He was the first conservative President in more than 50 years. However, he was similar to President Obama in one respect -- the first task of each was to combat the worst  recession  since the Great Depression . That's where their paths differed greatly. Reagan promised the "Reagan Revolution," which was based on reducing  government spending , taxes and  regulation .  His philosophy was "Government is not the solution to our problem, government  is  the problem." 1980-1981 Recession Reagan inherited an economy mired in  stagflation  -- a combination of double-digit economic contraction with double-digit  inflation . To combat recession, Reagan aggressively cut income taxes from 70% to 28% for the top income tax rate, and from 48% to 34% for the corporate tax rate. He also promised to reduce government spending and regulations, while reducing the money

AS the Reagan Administration moves to revise vocational-education r egulations, officials in that field of schooling argue that Federal b udget cuts have crippled the development and expansion of programs a nd that any new legislation must provide funds in this and other e ducational fields. The Administration, while hoping to implement further decreases in spending, maintains that the cuts have not been excessive. In addition, it says that its plan would enhance economic development and provide the states with increased flexibility to tend to the special needs of their particular populations. The total Federal appropriation for vocational and adult education in the 1981 fiscal year was $781.6 million and, in 1982, $742.2 million. The administration had requested an appropriation of $500 million for the 1983 fiscal year. The regulations are embodied in the Vocational Education Act, which is to expire at the end of the 1984 fiscal year. The act has been in force since 1963, an

When Ronald Reagan arrived in Washington, he inherited the Mental Health Systems Act of 1980. One of the last achievements of Pres. Jimmy Carter, this was passed by the House 277 to 15, in the Senate, 93 to 3. With as many critics as there were special interests, it was far from perfect. Yet it expanded the federal government's commitment to services, to research, to training professionals, and to patient rights. It identified stigma as an impediment to seeking and receiving services. It established parity in Medicaid and Medicare.  It recognized the link between physical health and mental health. And it dedicated $800 million over 4 years to redress the gross neglect of the commitment to mental health in earlier administrations. In short, it moved an agenda that minimized homelessness, the reliance on expensive nursing homes, jails and prisons, and one that to more hopeful choices for those who needed help. The Mental Health Systems Act was a milestone. It came on th

By Josh Levs, CNN Updated 5:01 PM ET, Wed April 29, 2015 (CNN) A term used by President Barack Obama and Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake to characterize rioters has given new life to a debate over the word "thug." "Of course it's not the right word, to call our children 'thugs,'" Baltimore City Councilman Carl Stokes told CNN's "Erin Burnett OutFront." "These are children who have been set aside, marginalized, who have not been engaged by us. No, we don't have to call them thugs." "Just call them n-----s. Just call them n-----s," he said. "No, we don't have to call them by names such as that." The Rev. Jamal Bryant drew the same comparison Wednesday morning on CNN. The President and the mayor are wrong, he said. "These are not thugs, these are upset and frustrated chi
