A 36-year-old man died after being struck by a public bus downtown on Tuesday afternoon, according to the Baltimore Police Department.

Shortly after 2 p.m., officers were called to the 100 block of West Fayette Street for reports of a pedestrian-involved accident. The man, whose identity was not released, was transported to a hospital, where he died.

The Maryland Transit Administration referred all questions to the police department.

The Baltimore Police Department’s Accident Investigation Unit is leading the investigation of the crash, which happened in an area surrounded by restaurants, hotels and skyscrapers.

NOTE FROM EDITOR

I was truly blessed to have known him.

Ekon was selfless, a natural-born leader, and a light in every room he entered.

He pursued law at the University at Buffalo (UB), proudly served as a veteran, and traveled the world — always carrying the love of his people in his heart, no matter their walk of life. Ekon also attended Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and Chemistry, with the dream of becoming a doctor.

On the morning of the incident, Ekon had just secured a position as a Housing Counselor with NACA. He was so excited — he had even called me after completing his drug test to share the good news. Helping people find housing was not just a job for him, it was his passion. He lived to uplift those facing housing insecurity.

In addition to his many accomplishments, Ekon pursued further education at Coppin State University, studying Juvenile Justice and Criminal Justice, with the goal of making a difference in the lives of young people.

Some of the greatest among us never receive the recognition they so richly deserve. Ekon was one of those greats.

To know him was to love him. Ekon was deeply cherished, and he will never be forgotten. I will scream his name until the world knows who he is!

In July 2024, Ekon prayed with Mrs. Esther Cherry of Baltimore, accepting Jesus Christ as his personal Savior.

There are great and royal people among us — especially our Black Kings — whose names deserve to echo through time. I will scream, yell, and fight until the whole world knows the name of:
