The Cafe' [Think Tank]- A Call For Black Men to Support Each Other

June is an excellent month for Black Americans. We have Men’s Health Month, Father’s Day, and Juneteenth. Three significant occasions that should prompt all of us to step up and claim our leadership roles within the respective communities we live, work and play in.

Black women do a stellar job of supporting each other, and this is something we as men should mirror. From #BlackGirlMagic, women’s empowerment events, business initiatives, sisterhood, and more. This is a month where we are celebrating black liberation, fathers, and health. Among this, we should use this month as a call to arms and action.

For this month, we are focusing on truly being ‘My Brothers Keeper.' To accomplish this, it’s time to lend a hand to other brothers in need. It is something simple as giving a friend who rides transit a ride to key places, supporting a business owned by a black man, donating to a brother founded organization, taking in a few boys as mentees this summer and the possibilities are endless. If you are a business owner, look at ways of lending your talents to at least five to ten brothers over the month. Here are a few suggestions:

-Host a fatherhood survival course for younger fathers or struggling dads. Believe it or not, some men are looking for advisement on basics like breaking down a stroller, discipline, healthy recipes, self-care and finances.

-Cash mob a business owned by a black man. Find a restaurant that a brother owns and host a men’s meet up there. It could be a father-child dinner night or even a date night where we bring our women to enjoy the business!

-Find a group that works with young boys. Get involved either through helping them get resources, being a speaker or a mentor!

-Present a business or career workshop giving legitimate pointers not just crap you can find online
-Volunteer or donate to a black male who is running for political office this year!

-Clean out your closet, storage unit, and garage. Give away items to another guy that you stopped using. We know you lost some weight so give away those larger garments you used to wear!

-Take your son out for dinner or ice cream. No phones just the two of you talking. Do more listening, let him speak!

-Get a group of guys together and tackle a community issue this month such as cleaning up a park, doing basic honey do items for an elderly or sick person or even a local community center. Some walls need painting, things that need to be fixed and more!

-Step up when there is something that you know you can do for one of your homies.

These are just a few items; you can do to get engaged and involved. The goal is to make this something that is a regular thing. Many things that are needed to be done and it does not have to be perfect. We are officially ending the era of endless planning and talking; it’s time to execute. How do you serve as your brother's keeper this month? Use the hashtags #DominiqueMag #BrothersKeeper17 so we can track it. Take photos and make posts on various social media outlets.
