The Oldest U.S. all black middle class Municipality, Mound Bayou, Mississippi founded by ex- slaves in 1887.
Incorporated in 1898 founder Isaiah Montgomery born into slavery to Joseph Davis one of the wealthiest slave owner and brother to President and abolitionist Jefferson Davis.
Joseph Davis believes in educating his slaves, he taught them how to read, write, and history. Isaiah was taught how to read, write, and history. His father also taught how to read and write taught history. His had a dream of founding a black colony here in the United States but sadly died before he could bring it to fruition. So Isaiah took on his father's cause and founded Mound Bayou. Very prosperous for very long time.
President Roosevelt visited the town and said it was a shining example of what ex- slaves could do.
Farmland was owned by the ex slaves until the early 1900's.
Today is a thriving all black middle-class town; with a very low crime rate.
Mound Bayou, MS is not lost it is currently an all black middle class municipality!
