Zimmerman's Lawyer Cites 'Shaken Baby Syndrome' in Trayvon Martin Defense

George Zimmerman, the man accused of shooting and killing unarmed teen Trayvon Martin in Sanford, Florida back on February, has cited "Shaken Baby Syndrome" in his defense of the possible homicide.

Shaken Baby Syndrome, or SBS, is caused by shaking an infant so much, causing the brain to move around in the skull which can result in death or serious brain damage.  Zimmerman's lawyer, Hal Uhrig claims that SBS can easily kill an infant, and since Uhrig is using self-defense as his client's claim, he's stating that Zimmerman defended himself after the 17-year-old Martin attacked him and kept banging his head into the concrete.

In the state of Florida, lethal force of self-defense is allowed via the Stand Your Ground law approved by former Florida Governor Jeb Bush back in 2005.

"He didn't commit any crime," Uhrig said on CBS. "He was attacked, broke his nose, hit his head into the ground and he defended himself. That's not against the law."

Should Zimmerman's case go to trial, Uhrig will use the Stand Your Ground law as the base for his defense.

The case has received much public awareness because of the fact that Martin was a black teen and the defendant Zimmerman is a Hispanic male.

However a recent USA Today/Gallup poll released last Saturday detailed that Americans are split across the color lines in their opinions on Martin's shooting.  73 percent of blacks say in the survey that Zimmerman would have already been arrested if he was white, while 33 percent of whites agreed with that view.  But 52 percent of the majority of whites that polled surveyed that race played no issue in the case.

What's your take on the case?
